ILOILO City – Two dredging vessels at the Iloilo River tilted but thankfully this did not result to an oil spill, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) – Iloilo.

What was detected was oil sheen from a minor leak, according to PCG-Iloilo’s Lieutenant Commander Ramil Palabrica.

The dredging vessels were operated by the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), he added.

Friday last week, the dredgers tilted about five degrees and yesterday, it further tilted to about 45 degrees.

“Medyo nagahilay na gid siya,” Palabrica said.

But according to PPA, said Palabrica, the dredgers already touched the bottom of the Iloilo River so it would not further tilt.

PPA will tap divers to cover holes of the dredgers where oil could come out, then refloat them.

PCG-Iloilo coordinated with the Marine Environment Protection Unit in lay outing booms to contain the oil sheen./PN
