ILOILO City – Last year has been an interesting year for the Philippine Stock Market, according to an Ilonggo stock expert.
Hernan Segovia of Summit Securities said that although 2016 began on a positive note, the second half of the year had been generally bad for many companies, with the exception of certain sectors.
Segovia believes that the uncertainty of 2016 will most likely carry over into 2017, and may cause stock market investors to take on a more “wait and see” attitude next year.
Moreover, he also added that buying and holding will not be a smart idea for 2017, particularly with regards to large cap companies. Instead, Segovia advices people to focus on small and medium cap companies, and to time their entry carefully.
“There will be trading opportunities next year but limited to small and medium cap companies,” he said.
He also explained that 2017 will be a trader’s market, which means that it will be based on sentiment and external factors rather than actual economic factors.
Despite the uncertainty and the potential troubles ahead, Segovia believes that 2017 will end on a more positive note compared to 2016. He also adds that the financial, mining and oil sectors will likely perform well next year due to global factors./PN
