BACOLOD City – Fercy Lyn Almaiz, a 19-year-old resident of Barangay Mansilingan, is this year’s MassKara Queen.

Almaiz, a political science major at the University of St. La Salle-Bacolod, bested nine other candidates during the pageant’s coronation night on Oct. 19 at the L’ Fisher Hotel.

In the question-and-answer portion, the top three candidates were asked a common question: “What is the importance of beauty pageant in today’s world?”

Almaiz’ answer was, “In today’s time, we are very much confused if a beauty pageant is still a venue for women to celebrate beauty or for exploitation and the like.”

“I guess beauty pageant is still very much significant in today’s world because aside from celebrating beauty, we celebrate now the process, we celebrate women in their own cause,” she continued.

“I believe that women have this preference to become whoever they want … beauty pageant is the right venue for this because you are not just actually dealing with perfection … they see to it [that] our ideologies as women are being reflected in the society and could create a greater impact on those young girls that are seen on this stage,” Almaiz ended.

Almaiz, a daughter of a law firm secretary and a traffic enforcer, also won Best in Festival Costume and Best in Swimsuit.

Meanwhile, the 21-year-old Claire Therese Porras and 19-year-old Vina Marie Peña were declared first and second runners-up, respectively. Peña won Best in Evening Gown.
