ILOILO City – A total of 372 people from three provinces in Western Visayas finished the Tourism Industry Skills Program of the Department of Tourism (DOT). They will now be the frontline service providers to local and foreign visitors in the region.

DOT regional director Helen Catalbas said the graduates come from poor communities in Antique, Capiz and Guimaras.

They were trained to be tourism frontliners to have a stable job and improve their lives.

“They will be service providers. They will be the one to attend to the travel needs of tourists when visiting their respective barangays, cities or municipalities,” Catalbas added.

The DOT chose the beneficiaries of the skills training program from associations of fisherfolk, tricycle drivers, and women, among others, from across Region 6.

In Antique, 27 members of the Libertad Tricycle Owners and Drivers Association finished the community eco-guiding training while 27 members of the Libertad Women’s Balikatan Multi-Purpose Cooperative finished the homestay training.

A total of 31 members of the Bugang Community-Based Tourism Organization in Antique also graduated from the community eco-guiding training.

In Capiz, 30 members of the Bugang Community-Based Tourism Organization graduated from the community eco-guiding training while 43 members of the Palina River Development Association, Lawis Baybay Small Fisherfolk Association of Roxas City, Katunggan sa Culajao Salbaron Association, and Samahan ng mga Vermicologist sa Roxas City graduated from the food and beverages service skills training.

There are also 42 Capiceños who finished the designing gifts and souvenirs training while 42, the food preparation, hygiene and safety training.

In Guimaras, 24 graduated from the tour guiding training, 40 from the food and beverage service training, 34 from the front office skills training, and 32 from the housekeeping skills training.

Catalbas is hoping that there will be more tourism frontline service providers in the region through the DOT’s skills training program. (PNA/PN)
