3ID joins quest to raise 1-M fruit-bearing trees

CAPIZ – As part of its contribution to food security and the protection of the environment, the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) joined the national government’s “Raise of One Million Fruit Bearing Trees Project”.

The simultaneous tree planting also marked the start of the Army’s 126th anniversary celebrations.

“The fruit trees we planted would make our area greener and provide an additional source of food and income for our personnel. If we do the same in our homes, it will be a good additional source of living for our family and we can contribute to the food security of our community,” said newly-installed 3ID Commander Brigadier General Marion R. Sison.

Along with stakeholders and people’s organizations, the 3ID personnel planted around 8,400 seedlings of fruit-bearing trees in the different areas of regions 6 and 7 during Sunday’s project launch.

The national government, through the Department of Agriculture (DA), targets planting one million fruit-bearing trees by June 30, 2028.

The Army and the DA signed a Memorandum of Partnership on the tree planting project.

DA senior undersecretary Domingo Panganiban said the partnership “would increase national food security, improve our natural environment, and promote the creation of livelihood opportunities.”/PN
