5 dead as storm hits Iberian Peninsula

LISBON – A storm sweeping across Spain and Portugal has killed at least five people, officials said on Friday.   

Storm Elsa hit the Iberian Peninsula on Wednesday and increased in intensity on Thursday.

A man died in Montijo, near Lisbon, after a tree fell on his truck and another was killed in Castro Daire, Portugal, when his house collapsed, officials said.

In Spain, one person died in a landslide while another was killed when a stone wall crumbled. A third person was swept by floodwaters in Castile and Leon, according to the government’s spokesperson. 

In Portugal, civil protection commander Pedro Nunes forecast that weather conditions would worsen on Friday.(Reuters)
