ILOILO City – More than 7,000 kilograms of campaign materials were removed from public spaces across Western Visayas as part of an intensified post-election cleanup drive, highlighting growing efforts to promote environmental sustainability after the 2025 midterm elections.

The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) Region 6 reported that 7,005.69 kilograms of election-related waste — primarily tarpaulins, posters, and other campaign paraphernalia — had been collected as of May 15 through the Limpyo Eleksyon campaign.

The initiative was rolled out immediately after the polls to mitigate the environmental impact of campaign litter.

Led by EMB regional director Atty. Ramar Niel V. Pascua, the cleanup was carried out by the bureau’s Solid Waste Management Section in coordination with Environmental Monitoring Officers (EnMOs), local government units (LGUs), and Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Offices (MENROs) across Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental.

“This initiative promotes environmental awareness and underscores the importance of proper waste segregation,” EMB-6 stated, encouraging both the public and electoral candidates to participate in the ongoing effort.

Collected campaign materials are being repurposed through designated Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs) in various municipalities. Recyclables will be transformed into eco-bags, eco-lumber, bins, and other items such as pouches, roofing, ground covers, and tree guards.

To scale up recycling efforts, EMB-6 has partnered with private recovery centers including Justin’s Junkshop, EGL’s Junkshop Subay Marketing, and Evergreen Labs.

Limpyo Eleksyon serves as a sustainable approach to post-election waste management, aiming to reduce solid waste that would otherwise end up in landfills and waterways.

“The campaign not only contributes to environmental protection but also reinforces the importance of maintaining clean and clutter-free public spaces post-election,” EMB-6 added./PN
