75 years of research excellence

FOR 75 YEARS now, the International Dental Journal (IDJ) has shared significant dental research and clinical practice to oral health practitioners worldwide.

Since 1951 it published public health, community dentistry, and epidemiology and beyond. In 2022, a subsection on Science and Technology in Dentistry was added and the section on Artificial Intelligence in Dentistry was added in 2024.

IDJ is an important vehicle to promote the World Dental Federation’s (FDI) global mission to be the global voice of the dental profession and to improve the oral health of people worldwide

Since January 2021, IDJ is an open access journal with no subscription charges. Open access means that authors who publish in IDJ can make their work immediately, permanently, and freely accessible to researchers worldwide.

As Professor Lakshman Samaranayake, IDJ Editor-in-Chief, puts it, dentistry is advancing. He points to the impact of digital technology and AI has virtually revolutionized professional practice, with robotic dentistry being the most advanced.

“To accommodate these changes, we have expanded the focus of the journal to include sections on AI, digital technology, and cutting-edge sciences,” the good professor says, adding that almost a fifth of the papers the IDJ currently publishes belong to these disciplines.

“We currently have an eclectic menu for potential contributors to IDJ, they range from succinct rapid review articles, full review articles, to commentaries, and a section on letters to the editor where a debate on the publications can be held for adding value to their publication,” he says.

“The IDJ will continue to play an important role in shaping the future of dentistry,” he says. “We aspire to excel in our art and bring to our readers the cutting-edge developments in dentistry so that the IDJ remains a cornerstone of dental literature and research.”

The IDJ features peer-reviewed, scientific articles relevant to international oral health issues, as well as informative articles aimed at clinicians. It is the official scientific journal of FDI World Dental Federation (FDI), the world’s largest organization of dental associations.

The IDJ has seen a steady increase in article downloads and Journal Impact Factor   rankings, attaining a 2023 Impact Factor of 3.2, which places the IDJ in the top quartile of the Dentistry, Oral Surgery & Medicine category.

Published every two months, IDJ features peer-reviewed articles relevant to oral health issues worldwide. These focus on international public health, practice-related research, inter-professional education and practice, and science and technology in dentistry.

The journal features original research covering Practice-related research; International public health; Interprofessional education and practice; Science and technology in dental practice; and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in dentistry as well as Concise Reviews, Commentaries and Succinct Rapid Communications.

The FDI was founded in 1900 as the Fédération Dentaire Internationale in Paris, France, and is one of the world’s oldest existing health profession organizations.

More than 100 years since its founding, the FDI serves as the principal representative body for more than 1 million dentists worldwide, developing health policy and continuing education programs, speaking as a unified voice for dentistry in international advocacy, and supporting member associations in oral health promotion activities worldwide.

The FDI is an association of approximately 200 national dental associations and specialist groups. The organization’s vision of “leading the world to optimal oral health” acknowledges that oral health is an integral part of general health and well-being.
