ILOILO – Police arrested eight individuals allegedly engaged in illegal cockfighting in Barangay Borongan, San Dionisio town over the weekend.
Caught at the scene were aliases “Reynold”, 37; “Roberto”, 60; “Erwin”, 44; “Loreto”, 67; “John”, 47; and “Leonardo”, 76, all residents of the said barangay. Also apprehended were aliases “Lope”, 21, and “Ariel”, 29, from nearby Barangay Agdaliran.
San Dionisio police said the anti-illegal gambling operation carried out on Saturday afternoon, July 12, following reports of an ongoing illegal pabulang in the area, also resulted in the confiscation of five fighting cocks, four of which were already dead, as well as P400 in bet money.
According to Police Captain Edward Villanis, chief of the San Dionisio Municipal Police Station (MPS), around 20 to 30 individuals were present at the makeshift cockpit arena when police officers arrived. Most of them, however, managed to flee, leaving only eight suspects in custody.
The suspects are currently detained at the San Dionisio MPS, facing charges for violation of Presidential Decree No. 1602, or the Illegal Gambling Law./PN
