DUMAGUETE City – A local policeman arrested in Cebu will be dismissed from the service if found guilty of involvement in the illegal drug trade.
Senior Police Officer 1 Cielo Bonite was caught with three civilians during a police operation in an alleged drug den in Barangay Tabunok, Talisay, Cebu.
Senior Superintendent Henry F. Biñas, acting director of the Negros Oriental police, is handling the investigation.
“I will personally prepare the pre-charge evaluation,” said Biñas. “If proven guilty, he does not deserve to stay in the service any longer.”
Other police officers who persist in engaging in the illicit activity will suffer the same fate, Biñas warned.
Bonite; Frederick Go, 46; Arnold Leceña, 44; and Jaime dela Cerna, 59, were detained and facing charges for possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Go was the primary target, Cebu police said.
The operation yielded 45 grams of suspected shabu worth over half a million pesos, dried marijuana leaves, a KG9 submachine gun, a shotgun, a .45 pistol, a hand grenade, cellular phones, and drug paraphernalia.
Bonite was an organic member of the Dumaguete City police station but had a record of getting transferred from one assignment to another, confirmed Superintendent Jovito Atanacio, city police chief.
Before getting detailed in Dumaguete, Bonite (a native of Guadalupe, Cebu) was with the Cebu City Intelligence Branch, and then moved to the provincial office, then to Sibulan police station, and then back to the provincial headquarters, said Atanacio.
Bonite was issued several delinquency reports due to habitual absences. There was a time he was about to be declared absent without official leave but reported for duty after three days, Atanacio said.
He was last seen at the Dumaguete City police station on March 2, when Atanacio directed him to report for work even if he was off-duty as a sort of “community work” to cover for his delinquency.
Bonite never reported for duty since. Then Atanacio heard from the news that he was one of those rounded up in the Talisay raid.
After Bonite’s arrest, Anatacio ordered a strict monitoring of officers on duty to allay insinuations some of them are moonlighting. (PNA)
