MANILA – Senators have been saddened by the passing of former senator Leticia Ramos-Shahani who was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in May 2015.

Ramos-Shahani, 87, died early Monday at St. Luke’s Hospital in Taguig where she was being treated for pneumonia.

“I grieve with the family and friends of former senator Leticia Ramos-Shahani on her passing. In her life, she accomplished much to advance the cause of women, not just in the Philippines, but all over the world,” Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III said.

Pimentel, also Senate President, added that her legacy will never be forgotten and continue to inspire.

Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto said the ex-solon’s death is a “big loss” for the country.

“She’s done many things for the country,” Recto said.

As for Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon, he saw how “determined” and “hardworking” Ramos-Shahani was.

“Indeed, the late Senator Leticia Ramos-Shahani remains a shining example of a public servant who our present and future leaders must strive to emulate,” he said.

Sen. Francis Pangilinan remembered the lady’s dedication to foreign relations and empowering women.

He likewise expressed gratitude for her commitment to public service.

For her part, Sen. Leila de Lima said she looks up to Ramos-Shahani for inspiration, courage and wisdom.

“Her words and works in the legislative, executive and diplomatic fronts are more than enough for the entire nation to bestow respect and adulation,” de Lima said.

Her noble causes and humility leave a lasting impression, Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri said.

“Before she was elected Senator, she was into poverty alleviation. Long before we heard the term inclusive growth, Madam Shahani was already in on the germination of this idea in the 21stcentury as then UN Assistant Sec. Gen. for Social and Humanitarian Affairs,” Zubiri shared.

Sen. Grace Poe recalled the inspiration of former President Fidel Ramos’ younger sister.

“From her extensive career in the foreign service to her stint in the Senate, Manang Letty demonstrated how public service should be: sincere, dynamic and exemplary,” Poe said.

Sen. Richard Gordon thanked the former senator for being instrumental in the creation of Subic, Clark and other base zones.

“For me and the people of Olongapo, Clark and other base zones, Letty will always be remembered and revered as the senator who steered the Bases Conversion Development Authority Bill,” Gordon said.

“She was patient and compassionate with the people of the base lands who were affected by the withdrawal of the bases. She listened to us as we gave her our vision and our plan for Subic. She was very magnanimous in agreeing to insert our Freeport plan into her bill.”

In the Senate, Ramos-Shahani headed the Senate committees on foreign affairs, on education, culture and arts and on agriculture and food./PN
