MANILA – Allan Mangahas came up huge in the fourth frame as the Racal Tile Masters entered the 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup finals with a 78-74 win over the Café France Bakers in the semifinals on Tuesday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Down 52-51 at the end of third frame, Mangahas drained three straight three-point baskets to start the final frame and give the Tile Masters its largest lead of the match at 65-56 on a triple by Roider Cabrera.
The Bakers refused to give up as it rallied back behind Rodrigue Ebondo to come to within 75-74 with 26 seconds left in the game. Mangahas iced the win for the Tile Masters with another triple with just 4.3 seconds left in the match.
Mangahas finished with 15 points, 12 coming in the fourth quarter, for the Tile Masters, which advanced to the best-of-three championship for the first time in franchise history.
Kent Salado top-scored with 16 points, eight assists and six rebounds, while Rey Nambatac and Sidney Onwubere contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Tile Masters.
“I just told my players to be patient kasi we know the name of the game naman,” said Tile Masters head coach Jerry Codinera. “We know that anything can happen so I am glad we showed our poise down the stretch.”
Congolese center Ebondo finished with double-double 26 points and 19 rebounds, while Andres Desiderio added 16 markers for the Bakers, which finished runner-up in the same conference last year./PN
