MANILA – The Department of Education (DepEd) assured the safety and security of delegates in the 60th Palarong Pambansa from April 23 to 29 in Antique.

Around 12,000 young athletes from 18 regions are headed to the annual sporting event.

DepEd and Antique are beefing up security in coordination with police, soldiers and other concerned agencies, DepEd assistant secretary Tonisito Umali said during the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum on Friday at the Golden Phoenix Hotel in Pasay City.

“Safety and security are the top concerns of the authorities, host province Antique and our Secretary Leonor Briones,” said Umali, also the Palaro secretary-general.

Security personnel will be stationed in all ports of entry (air, land and sea) and strategic areas in the province. Uniformed men and women will be on board each delegation’s transport vehicle, Umali said.

Police escorts will also be provided to the delegates and VIPs, while a team of paramedics will also be stationed in strategic areas.

A break in hostilities among participants from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. is also being planned to avoid injuries due to the summer heat.

“We are seriously studying the possibility of temporarily stopping all field events during such period,” said Umali.

The Education assistant secretary said the playing venues are compliant with international standards.

In fact, Umali said, the DepEd central office allotted an additional P30 million for the rehabilitation of some venues, aside from the P40 million appropriated by Antique and the P10 million from the Philippine Sports Commission.

Annually Congress appropriates P350 million for the holding of school-based sports competitions, including division and regional meets and the Palaro./PN
