MANILA – Two earthquakes, including one with a magnitude of 5.9, struck Luzon just a minute apart on Saturday afternoon.
The United States Geological Survey reported that the first quake, with magnitude 5.7 and a depth of 40.4 kilometers, struck at 3:08 p.m. east-northeast of Barangay Bagalangit in Mabini, Batangas.
The epicenter of the second one (magnitude 5.9) was traced to be 42.7 km deep and one kilometer south-southwest of Barangay Talaga in Tanauan City, Batangas and struck a minute after the first one, at 3:09 p.m.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), meanwhile, detected only one quake as of this posting.
It detected a magnitude-5.6 quake in Mabini at 3:07 p.m., which was tectonic in origin.
The agency said the quake was felt strongest at Intensity 7 in Mabini, Batangas.
Intensity 7 is described in the Phivolcs’ Earthquake Intensity Scale as “destructive.”
It was also felt at:
*Intensity 6 in Calatagan, Nasugbu and Tingloy, Batangas
*Intensity 5 in Batangas City, Sto. Tomas and Lemery Batangas; and Tagaytay City
*Intensity 4 in Dasmarinas, Cavite; Lucena City; and Pateros City
*Intensity 3 in Makati City; Pasay City; Quezon City; Muntinlupa City; Malabon City; Mandaluyong City; and Bacoor, Cavite
*Intensity 2 in Daet, Camarines Sur
It did not say if the two earthquakes were aftershocks of the magnitude-5.5 quake that struck Tingloy, Batangas last Tuesday night.
Batangas governor Hermilando Mandanas told radio dzBB in an interview that minor damages to structures have been reported following the two quakes. He said there were still no reports of injuries.
Radio dzBB also reported that several college level classes in Metro Manila were suspended and power outages hit a few areas in the capital region following the two earthquakes. (GMA News)
