BACOLOD City – A million trees will be planted across the city within the next five years.
The “Bacolod City Urban Development Greening Program” is a project of the local government and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
“This is one of the most ambitious projects we have ever undertaken,” said Mayor Evelio Leonardia. “We know that the impact of this project will be felt not just today but in the future, too.”
Former DENR regional director Al Orolfo initiated the project that aimed to make Bacolod greener by 2022.
To launch the project, Leonardia, Orolfo, DENR regional director Livino Duran, Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran, some councilors, and DENR and city hall personnel planted a tree in front of the Bacolod City Government Center on Thursday.
Narra was chosen for the launching because it is the National Tree, said Leonardia.
Representatives of concerned agencies also signed a memorandum of agreement for the project at the Office of the City Mayor.
Orolfo said they have a common goal of making Bacolod “green, habitable and livable.”
Aside from making the city more climate change-resilient, planting a million trees will also uphold biodiversity and help ensure food security, he said.
Moreover, the Bacolod City Urban Development Greening Program will avert water shortage — more trees will help make sure there is sufficient underground water — and give the city more green space, said Orolfo./PN
