ILOILO City – A 16-year-old resident of Barangay Sapao, Dumangas, Iloilo drowned.
The body of Jay-R Palma, who allegedly had a mental illness, was found near the Dumangas Port yesterday.
A port vendor, Rustom Cortez, saw Palma jump off the port around 11 a.m. on Thursday.
“Cortez sought help from us. We responded, but we were too late. The strong current swept Palma,” Lieutenant Commander Ramil Palabrica of the Philippine Coast Guard – Iloilo told Panay News.
A team of coastguards from the Dumangas substation scoured the shorelines from Sitio Nalu-oyan to the Siete Picados and Sitio Bu-ol, Barangay Dacutan but did not find Palma.
Their Special Operations Group also did underwater search and rescue, to no avail, said Palabrica.
Around 1:20 a.m. yesterday, the Dumangas substation received a report that a body was found floating near the Dumangas Port.
Jenny Palma positively identified the body as that of her son Jay-R, Palabrica said.
According to his father, Palma was suffering from a mental illness.
The body was taken to a funeral home.
Palabrica advised the public to avoid swimming or diving if drunk and properly guide children when near or at bodies of water./PN
