ILOILO City – There were no major maritime-related incidents when the island province of Guimaras celebrated its weeklong Manggahan Festival that wrapped up yesterday, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) – Iloilo.
The coastguard counted some 25,000 tourists that crossed the Iloilo Strait from Iloilo City to experience the 25th edition of Manggahan, said Lieutenant Commander Ramil Palabrica of PCG-Iloilo.
There appeared to be more Manggahan tourists this year than in 2016, observed Palabrica.
PCG-Iloilo estimated the daily number of Manggahan fest tourists boarding motorboats to Guimaras at around 3,000.
The festival started on May 20.
“The event was a success,” said Palabrica.
More tourists would be visiting Guimaras for the 2018 Manggahan Festival, he predicted.
The past week saw the coastguard mobilizing its rubber boats to secure people going to Guimaras from Iloilo City.
It also prohibited anyone from bringing deadly weapons in motorboats.
In coordination with the police, the coastguard made sure, too, that illegal drugs were not transported to Guimaras. It stationed in the wharves here five dogs trained to detect illegal drugs and explosives./PN
