BACOLOD City – The Local Market Committee wants the Annex Building of the Libertad public market in Barangay 40 cleared.
It recommended to Mayor Evelio Leonardia that they seek clearance from the Commission on Audit (COA), said Libertad market officer-in-charge Jonah Abao.
This came in light of the arrest of 14 people, including three minors, caught in a “pot session” around 11:20 p.m. on May 20.
Getting clearance from the COA will allow the city government to reorganize the vendors occupying the two-story building, said Abao.
The Annex Building has become a “white elephant” — some of the vendor-occupants now sell outside the building, while others have left, citing the area’s inaccessibility to customers — Abao said.
Its ground floor has become a haven for bystanders, mostly “rugby boys,” especially at night, said the market officer.
Currently the building is “blocked” to 120 vendors but may actually accommodate up to 240, including transient vendors, Abao said.
Transient vendors may be charged daily via the arkabala (cash tickets/official receipt) system, said Abao./PN
