MANILA – Cignal HD Spikers relied on Guimarasnon Jovelyn Gonzaga in the end to beat Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors 19-25, 25-18, 25-13, 23-25, 15-12 in the 2017 Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference on Thursday at the San Juan Arena.
Gonzaga finished with 22 points — on 19 attacks and three blocks — to help HD Spikers tie with the opening day winners Generika-Ayala Life Savers and Foton Tornadoes with a 1-0 win-loss slate.
Rachel Anne Daquis added 14 markers, while Cherry Vivas and Maica Morada contributed 13 and 10 points, respectively, as Relea Saet executed 23 excellent sets.
After failing to close out Lady Realtors in the fourth set, HD Spikers found itself trailing early in the fifth set following back-to-back conversions from Danika Gendrauli and Janine Navarro.
HD Spikers then leaned on Gonzaga’s consecutive points to snatch the lead at 8-7. Since then, both teams traded leads before Lady Realtors led for the last time at 11-10 on a Mar-Jana Phillips block.
HD Spikers came up with back-to-back hits from Gonzaga and Daquis to retake a 12-11 lead. An error by Gendrauli followed by two straight points by Gonzaga ended the match.
Phillips top-scored with 16 points, while Danika Gendrauli added 15 points for Lady Realtors, which dropped to a 0-1 win-loss mark along with Cherrylume Iron Lady Warriors and Cocolife Asset Managers./PN
