ILOILO City – Robbery charges will be filed against New People’s Army (NPA) rebels that raided the police station of Maasin, Iloilo.
They were members of the Coronacion Chiva “Waling-Waling” Command, according to Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) spokesperson, Superintendent Gilbert Gorero.
A statement from the Coronacion Chiva “Waling-Waling” Command, however, indicated that the Napoleon Tumagtang Command was behind yesterday’s raid.
Aside from taking away firearms, ammunitions, laptops, and money, the rebels also “carnapped” Maasin police station’s patrol car, said Gorero.
The rebels’ other getaway vehicle was a canter truck.
Both of these vehicles were recovered yesterday in Alimodian town.
It was unclear as of this writing if an attempt to steal a passenger van on June 15 was related to the Maasin police station raid.
Thursday last week, three men introduced themselves as NPA members and commandeered a passenger van in Barangay San Antonio, Oton, Iloilo.
The van driver, however, managed to escape and this may have forced the men to abandon the van in Barangay Rizal, Oton.
Mayor Mariano Malones, on the other hand, said NPA raid “affected the peace and order in our town.”
“I condemn what they did…(Maasinhons) once again fear for their lives,’ said Malones.
Some 40 to 50 rebels stormed the police station around 10:30 a.m.
Malones likened the presence of firearms-brandishing men in Maasin to the martial law period in the 1970s.
“Daw na-feel ko nga nagbalik ang martial law sang una…Nagakasubo ako sang natabo,” said Malones.
Following the raid, the Police Regional Office 6 ordered its Regional Public Safety Battalion to take over the Maasin police station.
According to the Coronacion Chiva “Waling-Waling” Command, they attacked the police station because, among others, Maasin policemen tolerated the proliferation of illegal drugs and illegal gambling in the town.
In August last year, President Rodrigo Duterte linked Mayor Malones to illegal drugs as a coddler. Malones, however, denied this./PN
