BACOLOD City – Disaster management officials and rescue groups are preparing for the feast of St. John the Baptist (San Juan) on June 24.
They are giving particular attention to beaches and resorts with swimming pools, where people usually gather to celebrate.
Rescue teams will be designated as “bay watch” while lifeguards will be detailed at swimming pools without lifeguards, said the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO).
The CDRRMO met with Philippine Coast Guard, Amity Fire and Rescue group, Chamber, Kabalikat, and Negros Rescue Unit, among other rescue and emergency-response organizations, on Thursday.
Barangay officials were also asked to help monitor their villages — especially areas with bodies of water — for any emergency situation, said Executive Assistant Joemarie Vargas, CDRRMO cluster head.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod urged all 61 barangays in the city to coordinate with the CDRRMO with regard to San Juan.
Every June 24 various Philippine regions mark the feast of St. John the Baptist with traditional merrymaking featuring water and seaborne activities, the most common of which is water dousing and sprinkling, read part of the resolution authored by Councilor Claudio Jesus Puentevella.
“Proper safety and precautionary measures” must be applied in the barangays with the help of the CDRRMO to “guarantee a peaceful, safe and enjoyable celebration,” Puentevella said./PN
