ILOILO City – In celebration of the Environment Month, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is holding a regional summit on solid waste management from June 27 to 28.

Between 200 and 300 participants are expected to attend the summit, a regular activity that highlights the importance of carrying out a vigorous solid waste management program across sectors.

“Sustaining Shared Responsibility in Solid Waste Management through Convergence” is this year’s theme, according to Engr. Ariel Gloria, regional director of the DENR’s Environmental Management Bureau.

Through the summit, they seek to increase the knowledge and capacities of environmental officers in local government units on the effective and strategic enforcement of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, Gloria said.

“Furthermore, we aim to reach out to local community leaders, the youth, the academe and other stakeholders to enable them to strictly observe ecological integrated waste management,” he added.

Part of the summit are an exhibit on waste recycling and recovery, presentations of solid waste management best practice by Bago City in Negros Occidental, and lectures on the roles and functions of the Ombudsman in implementing the solid waste management law.

Technologies, including Biodigester and Bioreactor, and sanitary landfill development, among others, will also be introduced.

Environment undersecretary Noel Felongco will give the keynote message.

On Day 1 a news conference will be held at 12 noon at the Amigo Terrace Hotel. (PIA/PN)
