MANILA – Rebuilding 15 schools damaged amid the armed clashes in Marawi City will cost around P800 million, according to Department of Education (DepEd) secretary Leonor Briones.
These schools were bombed, burned and/or looted, Briones said at the “1 With the 99 Tax Reform” Forum on Wednesday.
Up to P2.3 billion will be needed if the government decides to rehabilitate all 132 schools in Marawi, she added.
Around 16,472 Marawi children have evacuated to various regions in the country, and they are in need of bags and school supplies, said Briones.
While the encounter between government troops and the Maute terrorist group continues, affected students need temporary learning spaces, furniture and fixtures, books, and laboratory equipment, she said.

Meanwhile Sen. Leila de Lima urged the Senate to investigate the continuing plight of the displaced civilians.
“It is imperative for the Senate to verify troubling complaints, and properly investigate and assess the true living conditions of the IDPs (internally displaced persons) within and outside evacuation camps,” she said in Senate Resolution No. 420.
Around 82,767 families, or 403,052 individuals, were forced to huddle in crowded evacuation centers, the Social Welfare department said.
“These Filipino citizens and families are also reported to be facing threats from our own military, who have allegedly been refusing the passage of relief goods, conducting indiscriminate airstrikes, disrespecting the Islamic faith, and harassing women by telling inappropriate rape jokes,” she said.
“The protection and general welfare of the Filipinos who have already lost their property and source of livelihood, and who have been separated from their accustomed way of life should remain the highest priority,” the senator added. (Reports from Philippine News Agency and Prince Golez/PN)
