MANILA – Sen. Franklin Drilon will be in Iloilo City tomorrow to lead his annual dragon boat race at the Iloilo River.
This year’s event – with theme “Unity, Advocacy and Legacy” – is a collaboration with businessman Edgar “Injap” Sia’s Double Dragon Properties Corp. and the Philippine Sports Commission.
Eleven dragon boat teams will compete in the yearly sports and environmental event first held in 2012.
The race is designed to raise public consciousness on the need for a better environment, said Drilon.
It is an offshoot of Drilon’s project to revive the Iloilo River.
Sia, in a separate interview, said it will promote Iloilo City as a tourism destination and will “stimulate local economic growth” in Panay Island.
Teams joining this year are Boracay Sea Dragons, Bugsay Boracay, Philippine Marines, Philippine Titans, Manila Waves, Baji, Bohol Paddlers Association, John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University Team A and Team B, and St. Therese MTC-Colleges Dragon Boat Team.
Last year’s champion, Boracay All Stars, will try to defend its title./PN
