ILONGGO sports fans are in for a treat.
Various sporting events were scheduled as part of the 80th Iloilo City Charter Day Celebration from July 17 to Aug. 25.
The Sports Development Division along with the Philippine Sports Commission and the National Sports Associations prepared them, according to Rommel Castro of the Iloilo City Sports Office.
“This is a good treat to Ilonggo sports fans,” Castro told Panay News. “The sporting events we prepared will also cater to the developmental aspect of the youth.”
“There are also tournaments that cater to the elite and the professional athletes as part of our commitment to help develop potential Ilonggo athletes who can compete in the Olympics,” he added.
Age-group boxing will be held on July 25 in San Pedro, Molo district, while age-group futsal was slated from July 29 to 20 at the Iloilo City National High School gym.
The Fitfill National Weight Loss program, on the other hand, will be on July 31 at Iloilo City Hall.
Moreover, there will be the International Double Dragon Boat Race and the Interschool Age-Group Chess Tournament on Aug. 19; the Inter-Public School Arnis Tournament, Aug. 19-20; General Coaching Course for Basketball, Aug. 20-21; 80th Iloilo City Charter Day Endurance Run, Aug. 20; 1st Iloilo Street Athletics, Neon Lights Night Run and Inter-Public School Street Dance Competition, Aug. 24; and 80th Iloilo City Charter Day Shootfest, Aug. 25.
Exhibition basketball with UAAP titlist De La Salle University Green Archers facing Sky Cable Iloilo will be on Aug. 22. An exhibition volleyball game between Ateneo Lady Eagles and Perlas-BanKo Lady Spikers will be on Aug. 20.
Green Archers will also hold a free basketball clinic on Aug. 21 and 22, while Lady Eagles will hold a clinic and a tryout, whose schedules were yet to be announced.
“Here in Iloilo, we use sports as a vehicle to promote a healthy and alert citizenry,” Castro said. “Sports are also our vehicle to discourage our youths into trying illegal drugs, so we invite the Ilonggos to support our sporting events.”/PN
