MANILA – Rep. Jerry Treñas (Iloilo City) was satisfied with President Rodrigo Duterte’s accomplishments in the first year of his administration.
Duterte discussed his relentless antidrug campaign, legislative priorities and peace agenda during his second State of the Nation Address on Monday.
“There are many priority bills presented for consideration of Congress. The priorities for the succeeding years are presented to the public,” Treñas told Panay News.
In his nearly two-hour speech, the chief executive directed Congress to pass the National Land Use Act, the bill streamlining public services and the comprehensive tax reform package, and tackle pending legislation on the reimposition of the death penalty.
Legislators were also asked to discuss issues on the West Philippine Sea and the planned shift to a federal form of government.
Meanwhile, Treñas said it was “unfortunate” that the peace talks with communist rebels came to a halt. “Good faith must be shown by the other side.”
Duterte held off peace negotiations with rebels over the latter’s continued attacks.
He also vowed to spend money to build a strong Armed Forces.
“We must have a strong republic to withstand all threats and challenges,” he said. “Today’s reality demands – necessitates – an Armed Forces that is strong.”
Moreover, Treñas defended Duterte’s request to extend the martial law in Mindanao until the end of the year.
In his SONA, Duterte said he placed Mindanao under martial law because it was “the fastest way to quell the rebellion at the least cost of lives and properties.”
“The problem on terrorism is clear insofar as Mindanao is concerned,” Treñas said, “so much so that 245 (of the 291 members) voted in favor of it in the House of Representatives.”
