BACOLOD City – Sen. Cynthia Villar said the Senate must hear the concerns of people in the sugar industry before it approves the Comprehensive Tax Reform Bill.
The bill, which is already approved by the House of Representatives, was certified “urgent” by President Rodrigo Duterte on May.
“We will try to strike a balance para hindi mahirapan ang sugar industry,” Villar said.
The senator attended the Sugarcane Industry Summit conducted by the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) yesterday at the Nature’s Village Resort in Talisay City, Negros Occidental.
The summit seeks consensus among Mill District Development Councils (MDDCs) to perform their roles in the implementation of projects under Republic Act 10659, or the Sugar Industry Development Act of 2015.
The MDDCs were created by the SRA to involve the private sector in the advancement of the sugar industry specifically in research and development.
It also aims to provide better income for farmers./PN
