BACOLOD City – Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. suggested to triple the taxes on tobacco products to better implement the smoking ban.
This will also give the government additional income that may be used for health programs, Marañon said.
The Negros Occidental governor commended the practice of industrialized countries setting high tax rates on tobacco products.
The success of the nationwide smoking ban under Executive Order 26 signed by President Rodrigo Duterte in May depends on the implementation of the local government, Marañon said.
For his part, Marañon said he will impose the smoking ban in all provincial government facilities.
In this city, Mayor Evelio Leonardia issued Executive Order 22 reviving the Bacolod Anti-Smoking Task Force (BASTF).
The task force will monitor offenses in the city and conduct campaigns against tobacco use.
The City Health Officer was assigned as BASTF’s action officer who will coordinate with all local offices involved in the implementation of the city ordinance (CO) nos. 641 and 09-16-784.
CO No. 641 regulates smoking in all public places and conveyances, and ensures the strict enforcement of the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003.
