MANILA – Phil and James Younghusband decided to leave Meralco Manila Sparks and transfer to Davao Aguilas as they continue to compete in the ongoing Philippines Football League.
The Younghusband brothers moved out after almost six years of playing for the franchise and winning two championships, Meralco Manila confirmed in a press statement released yesterday.
“It is with great sadness that we announce that James and Phil Younghusband will be leaving the club and transferring to Davao Aguilas FC during the current PFL transfer window,” Meralco Manila said.
“We made an earnest attempt to keep James and Phil in Manila with an offer of a contract extension but the brothers elected to pursue this opportunity with Davao. They asked for a release from their current contract, and we have granted it,” it added.
The Younghusbands signed with Meralco Manila when the latter took ownership of Loyola Football Club in 2011.
The Philippine Azkals mainstays were an integral part of the team’s 2013 UFL Cup title and PFF national club championship in 2015mes and Phil the best in their new adventure,” said Viboy Genuino, vice president and head of the Meralco Corporate Business Group. “We will continue to support them when they play for the national team.”
Before taking the Younghusbands, Davao Aguilas already acquired Jason de Jong, Jorrel Aristorenas and Simone Rota from Ceres Negros, as well as Matt Hartmann and Nick O’Donnell from Global Cebu.
Davao Aguilas is currently in second to the last place in the standings with 5 points – 5 draws and 6 losses – and very unlikely to advance to the next round in PFL./PN
