ILOILO – The municipal government of Carles once again temporarily closed to public visits its famed lagoon Tangke.
According to Mayor Siegfredo A. Betita, this will allow the “natural recovery” of the saltwater lagoon in Barangay Gabi.
“To protect and preserve its beauty and integrity, there is a need to assist the natural recovery of Tangke by temporarily closing the area [to] public visitation,” Betita said in Executive Order No. 21 dated July 26.
This will also “safeguard” tourists from strong waves at the lagoon’s entrance during the southwest monsoon months of June to September, said Betita.
Starting Aug. 20, the lagoon will be closed and shall remain so until the executive order is revoked, the mayor said.
Around the same time last year, the local government of Carles temporarily closed the lagoon for the same reason.
Tangke is a saltwater lagoon of about 1,000 square meters and surrounded by steep, rocky cliffs. During high tide, the water there reaches up to 5 feet.
It has been attracting local and foreign tourists, thus providing livelihood to boat operators from Carles and the nearby town of Estancia.
Presently, it is considered the main tourist destination in Carles, boosting the flow of tourists and visitors.
Betita said the local government has the responsibility to protect, conserve and preserve the environment to enhance the ecosystem and biodiversity.
“It was also stated in Section 444 … of RA (Republic Act) 7160, otherwise known as the Local Government Code of 1991, [that] the municipal mayor should adopt measures to safeguard and conserve land, mineral, marine, forest, and other resource of the municipality,” he added./PN
