ILOILO City – Shotguns and ammunition were recovered from the house of a village watchman (barangay tanod) in Dumiles, San Enrique, Iloilo.
Eduardo Patubo, 52, was arrested and detained at the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Region 6 lockup cell.
Operatives from the CIDG and the San Enrique police station raided the house of Patubo around 4:20 p.m. on July 28.
They found two 12-gauge shotguns, 15 live bullets of a 12-gauge shotgun, two empty shells of a .38 revolver, and an empty shell of a 12-gauge shotgun, said Senior Inspector Norbert Sipule, San Enrique police chief.
The officers acted on a tip that Patubo was keeping unlicensed guns, Sipule said, adding that the operation was part of their campaign against loose firearms.
Judge Vicente Go of the Regional Trial Court Branch 68 issued the search warrant that the operatives used in the raid.
Patubo was facing charges for violation of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.
“Barangay officials will not be spared from the campaign against loose firearms,” Sipule stressed. “Tanod members are not allowed to possess unlicensed firearms.”
The law, Republic Act 10591, provides for the standards and requirements in owning and possessing firearms and ammunition.
It regulates the “ownership, possession, carrying, manufacture, dealing in, and importation of firearms, ammunition or parts thereof.”
The law aims to “provide legal support to law enforcement agencies in their campaign against crime” and “stop the proliferation of illegal firearms or weapons and the illegal manufacture of firearms or weapons, ammunition and parts thereof.”
It defines a loose firearm as “an unregistered firearm, an obliterated or altered firearm, firearm which has been lost or stolen, illegally manufactured firearms, registered firearms in the possession of an individual other than the licensee and those with revoked licenses.”/PN
