BACOLOD City – The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) reminded farmers in Negros Occidental to insure their farms amid pest infestation in the province.
The infestation may result to possible crop losses, OPA said.
The provincial government, in partnership with the Philippine Crop Insurance Corp., provided indemnity claims to farmers covered by the Negros First Universal Crop Insurance Program (NFUCIP), provincial Agriculturist Japhet Masculino said.
“They can ask help from their respective city and municipal agriculture offices or inquire directly at the OPA,” Masculino added.
Almost 60 hectares of rice farms in the cities of Kabankalan, La Carlota, Talisay, and Candoni town were infested by rice black bug this month.
The initial damage and production losses were about P700,000.
Application of metarhizium and light trapping operations were conducted to contain the infestation.
Under the NFUCIP, enrolled rice farmers may avail of the P17,000 claims per hectare of damaged area.
Masculino also urged farmers to follow proper farm management practices.
“We are urging farmers to always practice proper farm management like maintaining cleanliness in the fields,” he said. (PNA)
