MANILA – Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes threatened to kick out Calvin Abueva if he continued to be absent in the national team’s practices in preparation for the FIBA Asia Cup next week.
Just more than a week before the tournament starts in Beirut, Lebanon, and the Alaska Aces star has yet to show up since their sessions started last Thursday, Reyes said.
“Wala pa ring balita about kay Calvin e,” said the coach. “Kino-contact namin siya through Alaska team manager Dickie Bachmann pero wala, there’s no news.”
“If he doesn’t come (by Monday night), we’re gonna be forced to drop him. We have no other recourse,” he added. “[We hope] hindi na umabot sa ganoon kasi, if ever, hindi ko pa alam sino ang ipapalit.”
Not only in Gilas practices. The former PBA Rookie the Year was also absent for more than a week in Aces. He not around during their Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup match against Star Hotshots last week either.
“He has personal matters to take care of. That’s all I can comment,” said Aces head coach Alex Compton. “I don’t know if Calvin will play in our next game this week (against TNT Katropa).”
Abueva, a native of Pampanga, last played for Gilas during the Southeast Asian Basketball Association championships in Manila where he averaged 13.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists.
Gilas, a runner-up in the 2015 edition, was grouped with China, Iraq and Qatar in the continental basketball tournament. Only the winners from each of the four groups will directly move to the quarterfinals./PN
