YOUNG Ilonggos displayed their chess wizardry after dominating the two-day age-group chess tournament held recently at City Mall-Parola in line with Iloilo City’s 80th Charter Day celebration.
Adrian De Luna of the island province of Guimaras was the champion in the 16 and Under category with 21.50 points. He was followed by Cherisse Hope Gomez (17.00), Paul Manzano (14.25), Mary Helen Pareja (10.75), and Jan Krishna Salvinna (14.00).
Completing the top 10 in the category were Rhenz Gester Ang (13.00), Gloryvill Falcis (12.50), Jarren Matthew Ong (10.00), Floyd Lucky Roxas (9.50), and Prax Johnson Villaruz (8.00).
In the 12 and Under category, both Ysabella Beatrice Catinan and Anton Benedict Bebit ended up with 19.50 points but it was the former who was named overall champion due to higher break points.
Placing third in the category was Jasmien Cassandra Del Pilar, who had 17.00 points, followed by Kimberly Colaste (14.00), Hailey Leanne Chiu (14.00) and Danny Marie Gallardo (13.25).
Rommel Castro, head of the Sports Development Division of the Iloilo City government, said the age-group chess tournament was an avenue to discover the next Eugene Torre or Wesley So, both prominent Filipino chess players.
“The turnout was pretty impressive, so we are now thinking about making this a yearly event,” Castro said. “This event might be a way for us to discover future chess players representing our country.”/PN
