ILOILO – Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. joining Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) of President Rodrigo Duterte is okay with mayors, according to Mayor Jett Rojas of Ajuy, Iloilo.
Rojas is the president of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) Iloilo chapter.
“Mas maayo gani para isa na lang, mag-ulolopod ang mga leaders sa probinsya,” he said.
Though he has not received an invitation to join PDP-Laban, Rojas said he is open to join the ruling party.
Defensor, currently a member of the Liberal Party, has been invited to join PDP-Laban by House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.
In the 5th District, according to Rojas, Cong. Raul Tupas would be meeting mayors to discuss the possibility of joining the President’s party.
Tupas currently belongs to the National Unity Party.
Rojas said the meeting has no date yet.
“Siling ‘ya kon mag-take oath kita, kon mag upod kita sa PDP-Laban, matingob kita. Imbitaron naton si Speaker Alvarez or kun sin-o nga officer sang party sa Quinto,” said Rojas.
Towns in the 5th district are Ajuy, Balasan, Barotac Viejo, Batad, Carles, Concepcion, Estancia, Lemery, San Dionisio, San Rafael, and Sara.
Defensor last week said he was open to joining PDP-Laban.
On Aug. 13 during a visit to Iloilo City, Alvarez asked the governor to join the ruling party.
“I have an open mind,” said Defensor curtly.
In a previous interview, he said he did not have plans of leaving his party.
Alvarez also invited to PDP-Laban Defensor’s son and namesake, Iloilo 3rd District congressman Arthur Jr.
Alvarez acknowledged the importance of having Defensor in the ruling party.
“Siempre, ikaw ‘yung ama ng probinsya. Malaking bagay ‘yun. Mag-uusap kami,” said Alvarez.
The Speaker said his invitation did not carry a specific timeline or deadline.
Governor Defensor is now in his third and final term as governor./PN
