NEGRENSE Alexa Milliam bagged two championships in the girls’ event of the 2017 Iloilo City (Mayor’s Cup) Age-Group Tennis Tournament at the Iloilo City Tennis Center in La Paz district plaza.
Milliam, a native of Pontevedra, Negros Occidental, ruled on Monday the 12 and Under and the 14 and Under events of the four-day tennis competition that was in line with Iloilo City’s 80th Charter Day celebration.
A many-time Palawan Pawnshop tennis tournament champ, Milliam first claimed the 12 and Under gold after defeating Erika Ayson of Tigbauan, Iloilo, and then ruled the 14 and Under at the expense of Ilongga Avril Andrea Suace.
Jewel Milliam, on the other hand, stamped her class in the 18 and Under when she defeated Ilongga Jennifer Ocampo. But she failed to make it two in a row after losing to Althea Rose Martirez of Iloilo City in the 16 and Under.
In the 10 and Under unisex event, Derrik Jann Guillano of Roxas City, Capiz defeated Aleeve Feonne Suace of Iloilo City in the championship match.
Rommel Castro, head of the Sports Development Division of the Iloilo City government, said the tennis tournament was a PHILTA Group 2-sanctioned event and held in partnership with the Philippine Sports Commission.
Moreover, the event – which drew around 180 tennis players – was another public-private partnership in sports, with the help of United La Paz Tennis and Recreational Association, or ULTRA, headed by the president Angel Gella, said Castro./PN
