ILOILO City – Western Visayas’ most wanted man, the elusive drug lord Richard “Buang” Prevendido, was killed in a police operation last night at Landheights Subdivision in Barangay Balabago, Jaro district.
Armed with guns in a secluded two-storey concrete house, he put up a fight from the second floor. Policemen shot him to death.
“Magse-serve sana kami ng warrant of arrest, lumaban sila sa amin,” said Senior Superintendent Marlon Tayaba, director of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO).
Prevendido’s sole companion in the house, a nephew the police identified as Ariel, was also killed.
“Bina-bang namin ‘yung pintuan, pinaputokan kami,” said Tayaba.
The police operation was carried out past 9 p.m.
Cops recovered two .45 pistols and an AK-47 rifle from the house.
Prevendido used one of these .45 pistols, said Tayaba.
The AK47 was recovered near Prevendido’s body.
It was unclear as of this writing if Prevendido owned the house or if he was merely renting it.
“Sa tingin natin, matagal na siya dito,” said Tayaba.
A resident of Barangay Bakhaw, Mandurriao district, the elusive Prevendido had been embarrassing the police and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency. The previous Region 6 police director, Chief Superintendent Jose Gentiles, gave his men until Dec. 31, 2016 to arrest Prevendido but they failed.
The city and provincial governments of Iloilo offered a combined bounty of P1.1 million for Prevendido’s arrest.
Last night’s operation was jointly carried out by the Iloilo Provincial Police Office, Regional Intelligence Division of the Police Regional Office 6, and Iloilo City Police Office.
There had been previous sightings of Prevendido in various towns of Iloilo province since last year but he was constantly moving around to elude policemen.
On Jan. 6, 2017 the Regional Trial Court, Branch 21 issued an arrest warrant against Prevendido for violation of Section 11 (possession of dangerous drugs) of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. This case was in connection with the shabu recovered from his house s during a raid last October 2016.
PDEA operatives seized from Prevendido’s house in Barangay Bakhaw, Mandurriao a total of 83.235 grams of shabu valued over half a million pesos last Oct. 31, 2016.
The Iloilo Police Provincial Office had been receiving a lot of information on the whereabouts of Prevendido since last year – that he was in the towns of Dingle, Anilao, Banate, Janiuay, Lambunao, and even in the island province of Guimaras and Antique. It vetted these information until they zeroed in on him and decided to go after him last night.
A lot of suspected members of Prevendido’s drug group were caught since the Philippine National Police launched Oplan Double Barrel against illegal drugs July last year, including the “high-value” Bonie Prevendido, Richard’s nephew.
Bonie, a son of Barangay Captain Remia Gregori of Bakhaw, Mandurriao, and eight others were arrested in a buy-bust operation on Nov. 4, 2016 in Barangay Camandagan, Tobias Fornier, Antique./PN
