ILOILO City – Edward Marcito (for Poetry), John Michael Catigan (Visual Arts), Melecio Turao (Literary Scholarship), Ismael Java (Theatre Arts), and Chona Villaluna Gosiaoco (Cultual Dissemination) are this year’s Peter’s Prize medalists awarded by The Peter Solis Nery Foundation for Hiligaynon Literature and the Arts, Inc.

Edward Marcito from La Carlota City, Negros Occidental bested six others in the poetry writing contest, “Mga Binalaybay nga Gintugda sang Sugilanon” or poetry suggested by the modern Hiligaynon classic “Lirio”, a 1998 Palanca first prize-winning short story by Ilonggo writer Peter Solis Nery.

Other winners in the poetry category are: Rolan Fernandez Yap from Dumangas, Iloilo, second prize; and Nilyn Gamuza Pacariem, from Santo Niño, South Cotabato, third prize.

Another Dumangasanon, John Michael Catigan, won the 10K prize for Visual Arts (painting) category. His 3 ft x 2 ft mud on canvas painting entitled “Si Lirio Nangin Bulak” bested eight other paintings on various media depicting the subject and theme of the mute girl, followed by a swarm of butterflies, who turned into a lily in the “Lirio” story.

The nine paintings are currently exhibited (until today, Sept. 6) at Troi Oi Vietnamese Restaurant at the Iloilo Riverside Boardwalk.

For his scholarship on the literary biography of Peter Solis Nery and the literature history of Western Visayas, writer Melecio Turao from Tigbauan, Iloilo is awarded a Special Peter’s Prize for Excellence in Literary Studies.

A Special Peter’s Prize for Excellence in Theatre Arts is also given to Ismael “Maeng” Java of Bacolod City, Negros Occidental for his body of work in theatre and the performing arts. Java has just completed an oratorio entitled “The Kabulakan Oratorio” based on the “Lirio” story. It premiered at Southland College in Kabankalan, Negros Occidental on Aug. 23.

For her cultural work and documentaries, Chona Villaluna Gosiaoco, host of Tatak Negrense and broadcast media practitioner in Bacolod City, is also recipient of a Special Peter’s Prize for Excellence in Cultural Dissemination.

Marcito, Catigan, Turao, Java, and Gosiaoco become the latest ambassadors of The Peter Solis Nery Foundation in the promotion of Hiligaynon literature and West Visayan art and cultural education.

The 2017 Peter’s Prize awards ceremony will be held tonight (Sept. 6) at Troi Oi./PN
