ILOILO City – At the relaunching of the Police Regional Office 6’s (PRO-6) Oplan Drug-Free Drivers yesterday, 177 jeepney drivers volunteered have themselves tested for illegal drugs in Camp Delgado.

The drug testing was free. The results would be released before the week is over.

The drivers belonged to the Iloilo City Alliance of Drivers Associations, said Chief Superintendent Cesar Hawthorne Binag, regional police director.

While the Oplan’s drug testing is voluntary, said Binag, it would be good if all jeepney and taxi drivers would avail themselves of the free service.

“Passengers would feel more comfortable knowing their drivers are not drug users,” he said.

An identification card certifying the holder passed the test would be issued to the driver who tests negative for illegal drugs.

“Wala silang babayaran. Chance na nila to show to the riding public na hindi sila drug users,” said Binag.

Those who fail the test will be recommended for drug rehabilitation. PRO-6 has such a program.

Oplan Drug-Free Drivers was first launched last November 2016 by then PRO-6 director Chief Superintendent Jose Gentiles.

Bing wanted to expand it, covering even bus drivers.

“Hindi sila matakot kasi kung hindi ka gumagamit, wala kang katatakutan,” said Binag.
