ILOILO City – A farmer was fatally shot in Barangay Tiringanan, Janiuay, Iloilo. The suspect was a police officer.
The shooting happened around 9:40 p.m. on Sunday at the house of Police Officer 2 Abner Catin, 43.
The farmer, 35-year-old Nazario Esguiran of Barangay Balibagan, Igbaras town, was binge drinking and became rowdy, said Senior Inspector John Paul Guay, Janiuay police chief.
From what the police gathered from witnesses, Esguiran threw a bottle at Catin and tried to stab the policeman with a knife.
Esguiran died while being rushed to the town’s Federico Roman Tirador Sr. Memorial District Hospital.
Catin, on the other hand, surrendered to the Janiuay police station.
Policemen recovered from the crime scene an empty bullet shell of a .9mm pistol and an 11-inch knife.
Catin invoked self-defense in shooting Esguiran, said Guay.
He also insisted he observed maximum tolerance but the farmer refused to be pacified, added the Janiuay police chief./PN
