BACOLOD City – The Armando Sumayang Command of the New People’s Army (NPA) Southwest Negros Guerilla Front admitted to killing an alleged member of the Revolutionary Proletarian Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade (RPA-ABB) in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

Spokesperson Andrea Guerrero said the NPA was responsible for the murder of Joevanie “Elmer” Banista on Sept. 9.

Banista was shot to death while he was on board a motorcycle in Barangay Locotan, a police report showed.

Guerrero said they confiscated from Banista a .45-caliber pistol and several identification cards.

She claimed that Banista used to lead three RPA-ABB platoons operating in Ilog, Cauayan, Hinoba-an, Kabankalan City, and Sipalay City in Negros Occidental and Mabinay in Negros Oriental.

Guerrero accused Banista of selling firearms to landlords and planters, armed robbery, land grabbing, and cattle rustling.

Banista also committed human rights abuses against peasants in Kabankalan City, Guerrero said.

She added that Banista also had direct participation in killing Kabankalan Regional Trial Court Judge Henry Arles a few years ago.

Guerrero claimed that Banista also protects individuals involved in illegal drugs and gambling./PN
