ILOILO – Personnel of the Iloilo District Jail (IDJ) in Barangay Nanga, Pototan town would be subjected to drug tests.
According to Superintendent Jhon Montero, warden, this was one measure to make IDJ a truly drug-free prison facility.
The undermanned IDJ has a total of 58 personnel, said Montero.
Montero was appointed IDJ warden just this Oct. 1. He right away ordered an inspection of various cells and random drug test on inmates.
Four inmates tested positive for illegal drugs – Randy Legaspi, Joven Abantao, Tomas Gan, and Marque Acap Jr.
Eight sachets of shabu were also recovered.
Ten days after, 35 more inmates were randomly drug tested; all were negative for illegal drugs.
“We are sincere in cleansing the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology and this should start from us,” said Montero.
The Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) proposed the installation of signal jammers at the IDJ to disrupt illegal transactions thereat.
Detained drug suspects continue their clandestine operations using cell phones, according to Senior Superintendent Marlon Tayaba, IPPO director.
These drug deals were not only provincial but regional in scope, he revealed during a recent meeting of the Iloilo Peace and Order Council./PN
