MANILA – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte urged members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Plus Three (ASEAN+3) to “nurture a culture of peace” in the region.
Having similar value systems helped promote tolerance and facilitate “positive dialogue” among state leaders, Duterte said on Tuesday at the 20th ASEAN+3 Commemorative Summit at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.
“Over the past two decades, our cooperation continued to flourish steadily among the ASEAN external partners’ cooperation,” he said.
ASEAN+3 member states – ASEAN countries, China, South Korea, and Japan – have regarded each other “as one” and “a family,” said Duterte.
“We owe a great measure of our success to our common bond and vision,” said the Philippine president.
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang recalled how the ASEAN+3 cooperation helped in responding to the financial crisis in Southeast Asia. “We need to carry forward this fine tradition,” he said.
Financial cooperation among ASEAN+3 has increasingly strengthened, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe noted.
“The [ASEAN+3] was established as a result of the 1997 Asian Currency Crisis,” said Abe. “And since then, the scope of cooperation was broadened to include food security, energy, environment, and health, among others.”
South Korean President Moon Jae-in, meanwhile, encouraged the state leaders to “create a vision for the East Asian community of peace, prosperity and progress.”/PN
