ILOILO – In a suspected food poisoning case, 58 student athletes and two coaches from Janiuay town were hospitalized.

They were part of Janiuay’s athletic delegation to the ongoing 3rd Congressional District Sports Association (CDSA) Meet at the Lambunao National High School in Lambunao town.

The athletes suffered from stomachache and vomited after eating supper on Thursday night, according to Chief Inspector Jogen Suegay, Lambunao police chief.

The Janiuay athletic delegation had fish for supper.

“They started feeling ill around 8 p.m.,” said Suegay.

The students were brought to the Dr. Ricardo Y. Ladrido Memorial District Hospital in Lambunao.

The local government unit of Lambunao shouldered the hospital bills.

Fifty-six of those hospitalized were released after an hour of treatment while four were retained due to dehydration; they were discharged yesterday morning.

Lambunao’s Mayor Jason Gonzales said food samples were secured for analysis by the Department of Health.

He also clarified that each athletic delegation prepared their respective meals.

The 3rd CDSA Meet, which started Nov. 15 and will end today (Saturday), are participated by the towns of Badiangan, Bingawan, Cabatuan, Calinog, Janiuay, Lambunao, Mina, Maasin, and Pototan./PN
