ROXAS City – Mayor Leodegario Labao Jr. blamed the Capiz 2nd District Engineering Office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for the collapse of a bridge in Barangay Pangpang Norte, Mambusao.
The 30-feet high foot bridge made of bamboo and steel cable collapsed when more than 30 people attending a funeral procession walked on it on Nov. 19.
The victims – who fell off the bridge – sustained injuries and were brought to the Mambusao District Hospital where they were currently under treatment.
“Mayad lang kay manabaw ang tubig sa suba kag indi baha sang natabo ang insidente kay kun natabo, madamo gid ang napatay,” said Labao upon visiting the patients at the hospital.
“I’m blaming the DPWH Capiz 2nd District Engineering Office for this unfortunate incident. This (bridge) is their project. They are supposed to maintain this,” Labao said.
Labao added that he already wrote to DPWH officials, particularly the district engineer, regarding the incident.
The mayor said, “They told me that they don’t have the fund for the bridge’s maintenance as it is not within their jurisdiction.”
Capiz 2nd District Engineer Dene Baldonado Jr. further explained that “the DPWH maintenance fund only covers national roads and bridges along these national roads.”
Meanwhile, the municipal government has already provided boats so that people can cross the river where the bridge collapsed.
Labao said he will continue to seek “remedies with the DPWH.”
“I will shoulder the temporary repair of the bridge out of my personal fund,” he stressed.
Labao also vowed to shoulder the hospital expenses of those who fell off the bridge, also “out of my personal money.”/PN
