BACOLOD City – Negros Occidental governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. urged farmers in Negros Island to “go organic.”
Marañon stressed that Negrense farmers must practice organic farming so that the two-province island can earn the title “Organic Food Bowl of Asia.”
The governor fielded this vision during the third day of the Negros Island Organic Farmers Festival, which already generated an income of more than a million pesos.
According to Marañon, there is a huge demand for organically made agricultural products globally.
However, the supply of these products cannot cope with the surging global demand.
In the Philippines, the number of organic farmers has increased 20 percent, according to the Department of Agriculture.
However, Marañon said this is not enough. He added that there is a need for young people to love and develop passion for organic farming.
“The youth of today has no love for farming. All they want is to have blue-collar jobs, working in air-conditioned offices and enjoy vices,” Marañon said.
The governor added, “The Philippines is an agricultural country. There is so much potential in agriculture especially that our country has so much endemic plants, animals and resources.”/PN
