BACOLOD City – The number of reported cases of violence against women and children (VAWC) decreased, according to the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO)-Women and Children Protection Desk.
Senior Police Officer 4 Arlene Torendon, head of the BCPO-Women and Children Protection Desk, said this year so far, they recorded over 400 VAWC cases, more than 50 percent lower than last year’s 900 reported cases.
Torendon attributed the decline to the concerted efforts of the city government and nongovernment organizations to support the BCPO in its anti-VAWC campaign.
Torendon said the campaign against VAWC is being implemented down to the barangays where assigned officers orient women and children on their rights and how to protect them.
The BCPO records all abuses – may it be emotional, psychological, sexual, physical, and economic – toward women and children, according to Torendon.
The city is observing an 18-day campaign to end VAWC. It started on Nov. 25 and will end on Dec. 12.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) committee on gender and women, chaired by Councilor Cindy Rojas, is in charge of the campaign’s events.
The Department of Social Services and Development conducted an orientation on the barangay protocol in handling children in conflict with the law (CICL) as part of the campaign.
Rojas said barangay officials – as front liners – must know how to handle CICL cases.
The campaign in the city will not only last for 18 days, Rojas said. It will be a whole-year practice, she stressed.
