MANILA – Global Cebu took advantage of an undermanned Ceres Negros for a 2-0 win at the close of the 2017 Philippines Football League eliminations at the Cebu City Sports Complex.
Rufino Sanchez and Misagh Bahadoran scored a goal each in the opening half on Tuesday night for Global, which ended the eliminations on fourth place with 47 points on 13 wins, eight draws and seven losses.
Ceres was severely shorthanded, with stars Bienvenido Marañon, Manuel Herrera, Kevin Ingreso, Manuel Ott, Fernando Rodriguez, Stephan Schrock, Luke Woodland, Omid Nazari, Martin Steuble, and Jeffrey Christiaens sitting out.
Global went aggressive early with a Darryl Roberts attack from a Hikaru Minegishi miss but only hit the crossbar. The Cebuanos eventually scored minutes later with Sanchez hitting a left-footed shot from top of the box.
Just before halftime break, Global widened the lead 2-0 with Bahadoran converting a long-range shot that slipped past the hands of Ceres goalkeeper Louie Casas.
Ceres had its lone chance to score a goal late in the second half when Jose Elmer Porteria left-footed a cross by Arnie Pasinabo but this was easily defended by Patrick Deyto.
With the defeat, Ceres ended its elimination round campaign on second place with 57 points, on 17 wins, six draws and five defeats.
Ceres will battle the No. 3 Kaya Makati in the two-leg semifinals. The first leg is on Dec. 3 at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City while the second leg is on Dec. 10 at the University of Makati./PN
