MANILA – A native of Aklan province is one of the local contenders in the fifth season of the ICTSI Philippine Kiteboarding Tour, whose first leg starts Friday in Lakawon Island in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental.

Christian Tio hopes to dominate again in the men’s freestyle event, which he also won in three legs of the fourth season.

Accompanied by teammates from the Philippine youth team, the 17-year-old Tio will use the four-leg event to prepare for the Youth Olympic Games Qualifier next year.

Top-ranked racer Atte Kapel of Sweden, on the other hand, will banner the foreign field.

More than 300 participants are expected to join the tournament.

“We’re looking forward to another exciting and action-packed four-stop kiteboarding tournament across the country,” Philippine Kiteboarding Association president Jay Ortiz said at the press launch at the Mango Tree Restaurant in Bonifacio Global City on Tuesday.

After the Lakawon Island leg, the Kiteboarding Tour will bring competitors to Bantayan Island in Cebu from Jan. 5 to 7 next year, then in Boracay Island from Feb. 9 to 11, and finally in Cagbalete Island from March 2 to 4./PN
