BACOLOD City – The New People’s Army (NPA) claimed responsibility for the explosion that damaged equipment in a quarry site in Barangay Orong, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.
The blast should serve as a warning to all operators conducting irresponsible quarry operations, the NPA’s Armando Sumayang Jr. Command Southwest Negros Guerilla Front in Negros Island said in a statement dated Nov. 28 and released to the media on Nov. 29.
A blast from an improvised explosive on the evening of Nov. 26 damaged a backhoe owned by Hilamonan village councilor Raquel Siguero, the Kabankalan police said.
Eight suspected rebels were identified as perpetrators. They stole the cellphones of two equipment caretakers, said the police.
The NPA has identified 15 quarry operators in the area since 2014, according to Andrea Guerrero, Southwest Negros Guerilla Front spokesperson.
Three of these operators were allegedly involved in harassment, land grabbing and threat against Barangay Orong farmers, Guerrero said in the statement.
A fact-finding mission by the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas Southern Negros and the Defend Patrimony-South discovered that quarry operators have no permits or expired permits to operate, Guerrero said. (PNA)
